Ah, but you missed the key statistic, reporting of crimes in DC: - 80%

Trending down vs. the same time last year:

Homicide: -36%
Assault w/ a Dangerous Weapon: -34%
Robbery: -4%
Violent Crime Total: -15%
Burglary: -25%
Motor Vehicle Theft: -30%
Theft from vehicle: -23%
Property Crime Total: -12%
All Crime: -13%

Let's hope this trend continues. Let's also hope that the OAG will actually prosecute with continued pressure! No more catch and release! And that DC gets its irresponsible sh*t together w/ regard to the DC crime lab (little hope on that one, sadly, still seems a mess of a situation)

+1

Literally more people are alive now rather than being murdered.

There are people who track MPD activity and criminal activity in DC and it has been bleak, with multiple murders and carjackings every day - but recently there have been days of 0 murder. The positive change is noticeable.

The decrease in crime may be caused by emergency changes in policing and charging - which means that the crime bill is necessary and probably more is needed.

I live in NE in a neighborhood that has seen a visible, noticeable increase in crime in the last two years. I have noticed a definite increase in police presence in the last two months, and some decline in some of the ambient, low level crime (like people hanging out on the corner and selling drugs, and shoplifting from convenience stores and reselling those items on the street).

I hope the police presence stays and the downward trend continues. It had not gotten as bad as it was when I first moved to this area in the oughts, but definitely worse than 2017-2020. It was not great to see the area backslide.

Um, op?

You do not actually believe this means anything, do you? Because: it’s meaningless.

Most likely, MPD has learned to fake the numbers and under-report crime in response to pressure from the mayors office and council.

Are you completely unaware of how much crime increased from 2019 to 2023? A slight downtick this year is still significantly higher than pre-pandemic.

Sure I’m sure crime will go up but this is comparing the same time period, so it is objectively good news.

This is good news, but down from Bloody 2023 is fairly meaningless.
