Ran a rec program for many years. Happened every season. Not sure we've ever had to send anyone away, but came awfully close many times.

I run our neighborhood rec program (for the measly registration fee of $70), and every single person involved in from the club to the league president is a volunteer.

I have to beg parents to coach every single season, and have had to threaten to randomly withdrawal registrations if we don't get enough coaches. I imagine this happens in every rec club.

Yes, of course your child won’t be “alllowed” to play if no one steps up to coach. What are rec leagues supposed to do, magically summon a coach for you in exchange for your measly $130 registration fee?

Because parents use them for free babysitting.


Then they complain to the coaches about how they coach or that the practice day isn’t good for them or that it interferes with dinner and then they complain that their kid who is probably the worst on the team doesn’t get to play the best position or for long enough.

Bc they’re tired of babysitting your child while you sit in the car on DCUM.

League sends out those emails. Then one of a few things happen.

Ideally a parent volunteers.
If not, they may get a volunteer from another age group’s parents or among their regular volunteers
If not they may add the kids to another team making every team’s roster larger.
If not, then they have to say no to some kids.

And it may sound stressful but at that age is honestly a joy to coach or assist. They will give u stuff to train on. Just maybe bring someone along to take pics for ur

Usually someone steps up (my spouse). Even if you've never played the game, the club will support you - they gave clinics for new coaches, and there was an app my spouse used that gave practice plans. It worked put pretty well.

This happened to us repeatedly with a couple different rec leagues. I never volunteered and DD still played. We are with OBGC which is still rec but seems better organized. We’ve had the sane coach for a few seasons now and haven’t had those emails for our age group.

This happened when DS was young. MSI caller and asked me to coach. I said I have never played soccer and know nothing about it. DH also had never played soccer and was already coaching another sport. They then asked me to contact the other parents to help find a coach. Miraculously a non-parent stepped up to coach. You can increase the odds by reaching out to other parents if you know them.

Yes, what an earth does this have to do with you signing up early? If no parents volunteer, you have no coaches you can’t play.

yes, clubs can only take as many kids have they have coaches for
