For sushi parties, I've ordered from:

1. Kanpai Sushi on MacArthur (Bethesda). It's my favorite because it's always fresh and traditional, and as sushi goes, the price is reasonable. No fusion or modern sushi. Order at least 24hrs in advance.

2. Sushi Toro on Nicholson (Rockville). More modern combinations (that people seem to like, not me), pretty good, flowers on the platters. You can order day-of.

Order a large platter or two from Yuraku in Germantown. So fresh and so good.

I’m in Chevy chase but happy to drive a bit.

If you live in Chevy Chase you can afford real sushi for guests. Grocery store sushi is flavorless at best and gross at worst.

If I were going to a dinner party and the hosts served grocery store sushi I’d think they are cheap. Either don’t do it at all or do it decently. There’s other high quality food for less than sushi if budget is a concern.

Whole Foods and Wegmans both have easy catering platters and such to feed 20 people cheaply and have it be yummy. Don’t give them bad sushi.

I don’t want to have to order individual rolls - it’s too hard to figure out how many of each roll to get and some of the rolls are $20 each, which would get expensive. I just want a place where I can order a platter of sushi and a bunch of nigiri. We are also serving appetizers (charcuterie, edamame, smoked salmon canapé) and some salads.

What else are you serving besides sushi? Sushi for 20 guests is a large amount.

Either pay for good sushi or choose something else. Grocery store sushi is gross.

Love Sushi in Gaithersburg. I've ordered a bunch of their platters and it's always good.

I would have suggested Wegman's as well. Maybe you had an off day and try again!

The Amazon fresh store in Chevy chase lake is usually good but pricy. It really just depends on who makes it.
