It's an idiotic analysis. You assume that teachers only work during the school day, which is incorrect. You also act like every GS-11 is working every second of the day, which is incorrect. You clearly have an axe to grind, but are too stupid to figure out the right pressure points to make a coherent argument

OP here - I think we are saying the same thing. There are many in service who work beyond contracted hours.

A GS-11 maxes out at 107590 at a step-10 (about 20 years of service for steps only for time in service). An ACPS Bachelor's level teacher maxes out at step 21 99251. As for benefits, federal employees seem to have more options, but the minimum family health plan (with huge maximum caps) is $331 a month, and the platinum family plan is $1667 a month. Retirement contribution is 4.4%

Another comparison for thought is Fairfax County is hiring a Child Protective Services specialist II with a preferred MSW. That position is an S23 on the Fairfax County pay scale with a minimum hourly rate of $30.26 and a maximum $50.43.

That is not to say that teachers should not be compensated more, but there are many people doing really important work of service for similar compensation.

OP since you are so interested in this you should do a comparison of raises over time and benefits. That would give you a better comparison.

FCPS is also 7.5 hours. That’s super typical in teaching.

I believe APS is also only 7.5 hours - at least that's the case I used to work in. I worked an addition 2 hours at home most weekdays, and a few hours each weekend.

But we get it, you hate teachers. It's not something we haven't heard before.

I learned this week that ACPS has the shortest school day of any district in the Commonwealth - teacher contract hours are only 7.5 hours a day in a school building. From what I have observed, most of the teachers are absolutely cognizant of this when they show up 10 minutes before school and are out by 20 minutes after. Most teachers are contracted for 195 7.5 hour days - so a total of 1462.5 hours a year. Distilled to an hourly rate, that is $38.54 an hour for a first year Bachelors teacher and for the teacher who stayed on for a masters degree and is a first yeat $43.78 and hour. I understand that many teachers do work outside contracted hours - many, also, do not. I have a doctorate level degree and my hourly wage was and is equivalent. A GS-11 Step 1 employee in this area is paid $82764 a year. They have to work 8.5 hours a day for approximately 266 days a year, so a rate of $36.61 an hour. Many of those GS-11s are working hours well-beyond 8.5. We should just be very careful in valuing teachers above our FBI agents, federal law enforcement, drug abuse counselors for veterans, social workers for Health and Human Services, Service Members, Public Defenders, etc. Many jobs are careers in service where compensation may not reflect the value of the work. Many people are public servants. Many people would value a 195 day work year.
