Alaska by land could easily cost a lot more than that if you want to do cool excursions. Flights and rental car alone will likely be $5K. yes you could just drive around and camp and have an amazing time, but I assume if OP wanted to camp she would have said that.

Stayed in a terrific airbnb in Crete and affordable hotels in the other two (on Milos, the four of us were in one room, but fo rhe other places the kids were in a separate bedroom). We rented cars in each place which really opens up what you can do. Happy to give further details if you want them (our kids were 7 and 9).
