Auburn’s a great school, but it’s been “discovered.” They had a 39% acceptance rate this year. Their average ACT for acceptance for fall 2024 was a 29, which corresponds to around a 1340 SAT, and is probably higher for OOS. Only 10% taken test optional.

Texas A&M looks like a target only because the average SAT is 1275. But 90+% if the student body is from in state, and they have the top 10% program in Texas, which drives down the averages. Out of state, I wouldn't be confident with that score. Like everything else in the list besides Georgia State, it should be considered a reach.

I’m more familiar with UT, but the average test scores for UT and A&M are very deceptive. Because of the direct admission system, UT has an average SAT of around 1350, but they reject *lots* of OOS kids with 1500+ SATs.

He did not think UCF was a reach bc he knows a couple kids who got in with worse scores and grades.

You need to encourage your son to do more research and not base his college application list on anecdotal information from others’ experiences.

TO is a good idea! I would take advantage of it now while many schools still have it. However, just know that all the Florida public schools do require test scores.

Thank you. He did not think UCF was a reach bc he knows a couple kids who got in with worse scores and grades. I am pretty apprehensive about the process tbh. He worked hard for good grades and it sounds like the schools he wants are all crazy dreams, aside from Georgia State which I am not thrilled about. Not sure what we can add. He prefers large and south.

By "some" I assume you mean "every one except maybe Georgia State." Otherwise you're just not facing reality.

For UCF, 1270 is the bottom of the mid 50% range - so UCF is a possibility:
For freshmen, the mid-range (middle 50 percent) of our Fall entering class was:

GPA: 4.1 – 4.5 (recalculated academic core)
SAT: 1270 – 1390 (Evidence-based Reading and Writing + Math)
ACT: 26 – 30 (composite)
CLT: 90-100

If UCF is a possibility than so is USF, which is slightly easier to get into. Just know that these Florida schools are starting to become more competitive to get into because so many kids are getting rejected from UF and FSU. However, I would definitely gives these two schools are shot. Georgia Tech is probably unlikely (even kids with NMF scores are getting rejected). I would take the SAT again (even if they are good enough for UCF and USF) only because those schools also look at test scores and GPA for awarding merit scholarships. So if you need/want money on top of getting admitted, the higher scores really help.

Georgia Tech and UNC have a oos acceptance rate at or below 10 percent (UNC is lower), and GaTech requires SAT/ACT. I would consider those two lottery schools for any oos student.

VCU is really good for urban planning and GIS
