+1. Chicago and WUSTL have hurt their brands through over-aggressive mailings looked on with derision as transparent ploys to reduce their admissions rates. There’s a line between successful outreach and aggressive spam, and they crossed it years ago.

Harvard noses out Princeton just because it has the law school as a super-strong iconic brand unto itself.

Imo Harvard's marketing WAY outdoes Princeton's. Princeton is the #1 ranked college in all three major rankings(Forbes, USNWR, and WSJ) yet isn't seen as #1 by the population at large. On the other hand, Harvard has scandal after scandal but is generally perceived as the top school.

The true measure of the effectiveness of marketing is the degree to which a product's desirability outstrips its quality.
