It doesn't sound like you want to spend 4 days in NYC and there's nothing wrong with that.

I was coming to say this. Get lake house or something in upstate-ish NY

OK tell me where we might go in the Hudson Valley. One coming from Rhode Island. he would train to NY but could drive elsewhere. One is coming from Upstate NY.

The high line. Maybe little island? We also are more outdoorsy and enjoyed both of those along with Ellis Island.

What do you like: art, food, military history, science, music, architecture?

For outside stuff, Brooklyn or New York botanic garden (or Staten Island ferry to snug harbor). If the weather is warm there are places to go kayaking. Chelsea piers, city island, little island, and the high line (it's not very high off the ground) all have active/outdoor things. The cloisters is medieval art, but in a park so might be a good fit.

We took them once before when they were younger. Broadway show and Ellis Island that time. One is very afraid of heights so no high building views...but other thoughts?

Should add this will likely be a 4 day weekend. Kids have very little leave time at new jobs.
