It really depends on the coach. My son was in the same situation and we started the first week of school. It is not optimal because the other kids were running for two weeks already. But the coach and the athletic directors were accommodating. My son is not a very good runner either. I have to believe more coachers are like this than the other way around.

This is a kid who likes to run for fun and exercise. He plays another sport in a different season that is pretty intense and he's not sure he'll make the team, but he wants to be part of something at school. But I guess cross country is just as intense if the coach would only make an exception for a star runner. Though from other responses, it seems like some coaches might, so I'll tell him to email the coach if we cand find the info online.

Can he just show up a week into it? Should he contact the coach?

Every school is different, every coach is different. Contact the coach if the info is on the website. If it's not, contact the athletic director.

You can reach out to your school's coach to see if yours is different, but just be aware that significant numbers of team members wouldn't show up if they didn't have to be there.

For better or worse, Fall sports usually start two weeks before school, so that kids can be in shape and ready for September meets, and so most families whose students who want to be on a Fall sport adjust their schedules. It's unfortunate if your middle school didn't publicize this in time for summer planning.

Our cross country tryouts seem to start a few days later than other sport tryouts, possibly as late as the weekend, so you might get away with the timing working when the schedule comes out.

How fast is your kid? If he'd be on the team because it is no cut, I would not expect much accommodation. If he'd be running at meets from day 1, then I would expect the coach to be understanding

Talk to the coach. DCUM can't help.

My rising 9th grader is interested in cross country, which is a no cut team at our high school (maybe at all MCPS schools?). But we already had a summer vacation planned for the week of Aug. 12, which I think is when fall sports start. Does anyone know if that's a problem for no cut teams?
