I don’t know the answer but at our school if the phone is taken away only the parent can get it back. My son walks home so it’s a safety issue if he doesn’t have a phone by dismissal.
I am all for no phone rules but don’t make kids walk without any means of communication.
I told my kid if he takes it out and it’s taken away he needs to go to the office and explain he needs it back for walking home for safety reasons. I think he doesn’t want to talk to the office staff so it’s a deterrent for him!

DP here. I had a meeting with our MS principal about banning phones (he ultimately agreed with me and did it) but he said that he has had parents absolutely FURIOUS and screaming that their child’s phone was taken away in class for misuse.

As a teacher, I agree. But parents would refuse, and it's just not worth the aggravation and the fight.

Because we parents are just trying to keep our own heads above water. Everyone is doing their best and sometimes life is freaking hard.

Some people really love a fight. Honestly, they love to get riled up & feel justified, love to have a confrontation, & love to win. That’s what it sounds like in the case of your DD’s friend …the kind of parent who says “they can’t tell me how to parent my kid” & then fights everyone.

That’s different from the parents who don’t care if kid skips or misbehaves, & then has to deal with the punishment.

Because the schools have no consequences so it won't affect their children's futures and the kids won't be made their problem

Some of the patents behaved the same way.

Some parents are bullies and jerks and will abuse anyone in their path. It’s no wonder their children act the way they do. People with personality disorders raising children doesn’t help either.

I don't know any parent who would behave like that about the phone. Why did your daughter think it was a good idea to be on the phone after her friend lost the phone and knowing her the parent acting badly. She should have been mortified getting in trouble and mortified for her friend.

They are lazy and selfish and its easier to just give into the child than to parent properly. I noticed this early on with screen time and lack of bed times and nap times. Then later on it was the kids that didn't seem to have any rules or restrictions of any kind.

And these are parents that, on the surface, seem like "good parents." Have a nice house, attend back to school night, join the PTA, show up to sports games, etc. But its all a facade. At home they don't monitor/support/scaffold/restrict/guide anything.

They’re burned out. No bandwidth for parenting. I’m not condoning it but that’s what it is.
