There's really not a whole lot in between DC and Michigan unless you want to go into the mountains a bit (and take quite a bit of time), or maybe get off the OH Turnpike near Lake Erie. But April obviously not the best time for a dip in the lake.

That's because people go to Michigan to vacation, not Ohio.

Ha yeah and not south central Michigan either.

We used to make this trip every summer by until my parents sold their lake cottage. We stopped in Cranberry, PA, north of Pittsburgh, where we stayed at a Holiday Inn where we could walk to an Italian restaurant for dinner (such a relief not to get back in the car for a meal!).

If we got on the road earlier, then we would stop south of Cleveland. If we were making really good time, then we would drive all the way to Oberlin, which had some good restaurants and was a chill spot to walk toddlers and the dog.

I was stuck my DD at the Detroit airport with absolutely no room on flights the next day and I approached another woman traveling with her daughter to see if they wanted to split the driving in a rental car! I knew we could do it in one day with two drivers! We ended up all getting on a flight back to DC.

Maybe rent one of those passenger vans and combine with the other posters!

Lots of fun things to do in Pittsburgh itself.

The Laurel Highlands area has hotels and bed 'n' breakfasts.

There are two Frank Lloyd Wright house museums in the area.

Cleveland has the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame

You can drive to detroit in a day. But it is a bit grueling. Pittsburgh is kind of a natural stopping point—you are almost out of the harrowing, mountainously curvy PA turnpike and on to the monotonous flatlands of Ohio.

Be aware that mid april is still totally within the “random ice storm” time frame for michigan. Be very alert about weather forecasts, it can be very different on the PA-OH line vs the Ohio-MI line.

My DD and I have to break up the drive to East Landing. Is there a pretty/interesting/relaxing etc. place to stop? It will be mid-April.

Thanks!
