A full Olympic metal weight set including 2 bars with spin collars , 45lb plates, 25s, 10s that were sitting outside in this fool's front yard.
He was drunk when I stop and asked if he wanted to sell the set. He settled on 10 bucks which I am pretty sure was what he needed for a 750ml bottle of cheap vodka.
I still have the weight set.

I worked in a talent agency in London and my DH for a TV production company. There are a lot of freebies. We still get boxes of champagne, mezcal, wine, sushi knives, martini kits from one company. We've had hand made chocolates, blankets, bicycles, and one-off pieces by designers of handbags and other clothing - normally sent in the hope someone famous will wear it and get papped. This has been the case for us for the past 20 years.

Intangible: Being mixed. Having parents from two skin colors, ethnicities, religions, etc has been the greatest gift. I lost out on (bigoted) relatives being involved in our lives, but I gained so much positive human perspective. What a lot of people learn later in life, was so innately natural for me. I'm so grateful my parents went against the grain.


Tangible:

Gutters on the front of the house.

I got an estimate, agreed, and they came out. They said they'd email me an invoice. I contacted them at least 4 times (both by email and phone) - but they never sent me an invoice. That was 3+ years ago.

After a while, I just let it be. I accepted it as a gift from the universe.

The one that tickled me the most was a travel baseball bat that was in excellent condition and is highly sought after by certain travel baseball groups. Not sure if the parent who gave it to me realized what a gold mine she was sitting on.

This is very common but...our cat. She's worth a million.

I ordered a Gap jean jacket from ThredUp once and they sent me an American Eagle one instead. I argued with customer service that I wouldn’t pay to return it as it wasn’t my error, so they just gave it to me. Turns out the jacket is actually super cute and I wear it all the time!

I think about this often, especially every time I pull out my sewing box. Years ago I lived near a bunch of nuns who sat things on the curb to giveaway. One time this was a large sewing box complete with every color of thread, needles, spare buttons, pretty much everything you would need to mend. I use it frequently and every time I marvel at what a timesaver it's been since it's unlikely that I would devote time to finding/buying all that stuff. I've also received a bunch of Kosta Boda snowball candle holders from a house "sale" where everything was free and a bunch of the free gifts that you get with premium makeup/fragrance purchases from single person on Freecycle. For our weekend enjoyment, what's the best thing you've ever received for free? Tangible objects only.
