I know you didnt want celeb examples, but in the Carrie Underwood song where she breaks a guys headlights with a baseball bat - shes being a pick me. "She probably orders some fruity drink because she cant shoot whiskey" putting down the woman for being girly, insinuating she (Carrie) is better because she can hang with the dudes and shoot whiskey.
Basically if you have to put down other women to "win" you're probably a pick me.
This is the heart of it. It can be explicit or it can be gratuitously implicit (i.e., the heavily implied "see howmuch more appealing I am than them").
It's the framing of "pick me OVER THEM."
