Why doesn’t he land a Fed contracting role, those pay poorly but give benefits and hire easily if you have clearance? Big tech is contracting, so he may not get a chance for the brass ring again soon.

Contact someone at your state ACA. Your kids may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. If you are eligible for COBRA, find out how much it will cost. That way you can compare the costs and coverage for COBRA, ACA plans and Medicaid and CHIP options with your current needs. You might, for example, get a low cost plan through the ACA just for yourself and for your husband if your kids qualify for CHIP vs maintaining a family plan. Also, find out if your company is willing to be flexible with paying for an additional month of coverage if you work 1 day in the next coverage month. ( I.e. if your last day of work is 4/1 vs 3/31 will coverage be maintained throughout April— which will give you more time to plan.)

Things to do:
- talk to your company to see if they have any other contracts that can use your skills. I've been a federal contractor for 30 years and sometimes when one contract is ending or pink-slipping, they have some openings on other contracts that they can slide a few people into
- if you have contact at your client, ask them if they know of other contracts that may have openings.

- if neither you nor your husband finds employment by your last day of employment
1. ask your employer how to enroll in COBRA. If you were a salaried W-2 employee with health insurance, they should be required to provide you COBRA extension coverage. With COBRA, you essentially pay the full premium (the part you were paying plus the part your employer was paying) and you get to continue the same coverage you had. Find out how long COBRA coverage extends because the duration may vary from employer to employer.
2. apply for unemployment insurance. It's not much but it should help you pay for basics like weekly shopping and utilities
3. call your mortgage lender and inform them that both of you have lost your employment and ask if you can get a waiver for your mortgage. Some lenders will waive one or two months of mortgage (essentially they halt your payments for 30-60 days) and just roll in additional interest into the loan payment amount.
4. call credit card companies and explain that you both lost employment. Some CC companies will waive the minimum (and just charge you regular interest) for a month or two. It will allow you to get by without CC payments for a month or two.
5 same with utilities and any regular payments. Call and talk to customer service reps to see what can be done until you find work.

losing insurance is a qualifying event for marketplace insurance. Regardless, you should also be eligible for cobra when your insurance benefits end.

Start looking to see what insurance is available to you in your state's aca marketplace, and also start applying to jobs and temp agencies.

If you have health insurance as a W2, you qualify for COBRA. I never used COBRA. too expensive. I started a new job January 16. My health insurance with them is more than I have ever paid out of pocket. It doesn't start until March 1. I have been without health insurance since mid October. I was laid off end of September.

Both of you need to reach out to placement agencys and head hunters. Let them do the work for you.

My husband who was working for a major large tech company was laid off before Thanksgiving and has been looking for work since then. He has been Interviewing round after round with large and small tech company with no luck yet. We have two elementary school age kids and have been living off my one income since then. I am also in tech but work as a contractor and just found out my contract will be coming to an end next month. We have been under my insurance benefits through my job. I am now freaking out about having to quickly find something right away before my contract ends and it is causing me so much anxiety. Not sure what I would do for healthcare for my kids as one has special needs and really need the insurance.
