I actually ordered this sweater and ended up returning it. The sleeves were really unflattering. This is yet another example of a perfectly good basic being ruined because the manufacturer wanted to add some extra "flair."

I agree with the PP who said that the in-store talbots stuff mostly looks like an 80 year old's closet. But they do have individual pieces that work well as basics and that are better made than some other brands. I somehow ended up on the mailing list, and I'm actually a little tempted by this blazer, which I thought would look cute with jsut plain navy pants and a white t-shirt. I have a lot of meetings where I need to be a little dressed up, but don't need a suit.

I'm following this thread because 20 years ago when I started working I bought a bunch of fine knit silk sweater shells which have been perfect for wearing under suits. They are now all old and I can't find any real replacement. The brand I used to get was August Silk, which was always on sale at Hecht's and Macy's, but seems to be totally gone now. Over the last few years, I've noticed that the days of cheap silk seems to be over -- I used to be able to find real silks shirts, sweaters and PJs for moderate prices, but now it's all pretty expensive (e.g., $200 for a real silk blouse).

I was in Talbots recently during a desperate hunt for suits, and it truly was things my grandmother would have worn - lots of floral prints and pastels.

Following for the sweater recommendation.

Now that it's almost spring, I'd like to get a good quality cotton-silk pullover sweater, ideally slightly oversized so men's is ok too. Silk adds a nice sheen to cotton, but I'm sure there are other good fabrications as well. Not seeing much out there though. Quince has one in the mens section but only navy and black and the stitch looks kind of ugly.
