Summer before, and early summer. That way no possible dental issues from the Wisdom teeth during Freshman year. Recovery typically is 2 or 3 days.

Immediately - summer before it possible. I had mine impacted while in college at an away game and it was a really terrible experience. To be away from your family dealing with it is awful. I had lock jaw too. Needed emergency removal from some rando dentist I didn't know in the middle of track season and classes. Would not wish it on anyone.

My now 10th grader had hers impacted so they were taken out this year. It was not smooth healing for her and required some follow up visits (1 is normal, more than 1 is not). Took her 6 days to recover.

Many people have their wisdom teeth impacted. I had all 5 (yes 5) of mine impacted, my spouse and both kids had all 4 impacted. One kid had some turned and more into the bone---that left them with a bruised face from the work to remove it (oral surgeon had warned it might happen, it took them double the time to remove them--surgery for all 4 was over 2 hours)

Get them out in the summer before freshman year. Schedule it around any "orientation events" for their school.
You dont really want to wait, because it can become quite painful and you dont want emergency WT removal while at college. It really takes 7-10 days to recover from it. And even if very careful, your kid can get a pocket/infection 7-8 days in. My one teen had that happen about 7-8 days in---woke up in the morning and half their face was double in size. It was quite scary and painful. So you don't want them doing this while at college

My current 12th grader just got them out over a 4 day weekend.
For anyone planning on doing them once they are off at college - for our Dr they wanted to do a follow up a week after surgery so make sure you talk ahead of time what the plan might be if that will be an issue.
The protocol for post surgery was antibiotics for a week. OTC pain killer as needed. A special mouthwash / rinse for a week.

Though it did kind of hang like a cloud over Christmas .

I think the summer before would be better.

Book early. Lots of college students have the same plan.

Mine is coming home for spring break next week. Getting them out Tuesday and flying back to school on Saturday. We’ve been putting this off for a while but finally decided to just do them.

Do them whenever it’s convenient.

Get it done when they are living at home and under your supervision. While most wisdom tooth removal goes smoothly, some people have an issue. I would not schedule during Thanksgiving break for a college student.

Do it this summer. If they are impacted it can create headaches etc which you don’t want your kid dealing with freshman year

Recovery time varies by the kid, the skill of the surgeon, and the degree of impaction. It can be up to two weeks of feeling crappy or dealing with an infection or dry socket. DC got it taken care of the summer before freshman year.

I had one pulled. It was no different than regular tooth. It came out in one piece, and there was nothing to recover from.
Took ten minutes and cost $600 cash. I will have them all pulled but when they give me hard time. One did and out it came.

I had thought that if it is determined that wisdom need to be removed that the sooner the better. Waiting could potentially make the removal more challenging or painful or both due to the tooth roots continuously growing and possible interfering with nerves in the area. Why not just have it done this coming summer?

Also, my college sophomore ended up taking a summer course online over the summer after their freshman year. He could have also fit in having wisdom teeth removed but it would have been slightly more complicated.

It’s like 2 days of rest afterwards. It’s not going to interfere with any internships.
