Because the person donating often dictates how their money must be used. Same situation here. This is not some wonderful thing the school decided, it's the wonderful thing the gift giver did.

+1 I think that the NY Times article said Einstein has like 5x the percentage of medical students with high levels of debt (i.e. not rich kids whose parents are paying). The other thing I loved was that she insisted on keeping the school named Einstein rather than having it named after herself like so many other donors who donated far less but got their name on (ex: Langone, Weill etc.)

Another route to free med school is to join the military. No tuition and you get junior officer pay while being a student.

We need more doctors in this country.

Frank Langone (Home Depot founder) made a similar gift like 3 years ago.

We need more doctors willing to practice the medicine the country needs, that often doesn't pay well (geriatric, rural medicine, etc.) vs. kids saddled with huge debt that have to specialize in plastic surgery and other high $$ practices.

Not sure there are any strings attached to the free Medical school, but hopefully not having the excessive student loan burden helps.

Med school graduates kids with tons of debt. Certainly, it makes these schools very attractive for applicants.
