There are several new varieties that have been released by the university of Saskatchewan that have been growing in popularity. Of these I have grown Carmine Jewel, Crimson Passion, and Juliet.

Juliet was the best by a margin. It grows as a small tree or large bush and produces very sweet tart cherries with a much darker red than montmorency.

Please be aware that like most fruit trees in our area they will require a fair bit of care. They will get cherry leaf spot and if you hope to eat your cherries you will need to protect them from birds and squirrels.

I haven't done any taste testing but we have a Montmorency sour pie cherry and it's just sweet enough to eat off the tree in small numbers but tart enough to make amazing baked goods. Took a few years to get a serious crop but last year (year 6) I couldn't keep up and left a solid third for the birds.
