I was planning to take my then 9 yr old to CPH when the pandemic hit. I feel like we missed a great window. We had planned to go to the museums—they have Viking ships that kids can explore. I planned a day to Billud to see the Lego factory and of course Legoland. We were going to bounce down the Havnegade. They have sidewalk trampolines! Add then I planned to take them to Tivoli gardens. I would reconsider CPH

I'm surprised about your thoughts on Copenhagen. It's amazing for kids. It's a very manageable city with lots of cool things - Tivoli Gardens, boat rides, castles, viking museums, etc. If it's warm out, you can even swim right off city piers and there are many smaller beaches there. Easy train system.

Maybe southern France. Or possibly the Lake District of England if outdoors and walks are your thing.

OP said 8, not 4. An 8 yr old will remember a big trip like this (though they might not remember the same stuff you do, or the stuff you expect them to remember). I'd make sure not to pack too much in and try to keep it low stress, as that will maximize the good memories for both of you.

Athens, Rome, London or Paris will have famous things she’s seen in TV/movies/books. That may make it more interesting to an 8yo.

What does your kid like doing? Art stuff, food stuff, history stuff, science stuff, outdoorsy stuff?

My kid loved Copenhagen, btw. Tivoli gardens, a boat tour and kayaking, some cool old neighborhoods, lots of pastries, a couple castles.

Malmo is also great (kayaking in the canals, some great food) but small. There is some cool countryside to explore around there though, and so easily accessible by train.

Some options available by short, cheap flight-- Berlin or Hamburg, Oslo, Stockholm.

What time of year? I would not go Oslo or Stockholm outside of the summer months unless your kid is great with cold and likes cold-weather activities.
