My kid's school allows it but you have to ask permission first and be approved.

At some schools it is very easy. A my kid's school (Brown) it is very hard-- they are unlikely to give credit, except in extenuating circumstances. (Study abroad is a different...)

My kid actually took a course at home in summer to take care of a prereq-- that was fine. But they never transferred in the credit, itself.

As you suspected - it depends on the college.

I wanted to do this when I was in college and my private university said "nope" (or...those would be electives that can't count towards graduation or a major/minor....). The only credits they accepted were through study abroad programs.

You should get prior approval from the registrar. My child is at a VA college and is taking a general requirements class this summer through Nova. When I was in college long ago, I took a summer language class at Harvard and it counted. I recall I had to make sure it had enough credits to count as a full class at my university.

it depends entirely upon what your kid's college/university will allow. Check with them first before doing anything. Some schools wll accepts credits but not grades. Some will accept both. Some will take community college; others won't.

I was a bit gobsmacked to find UMich accepting a whole list of Nova CC classes for credit. UMich Reddit is clear about avoiding lower level UMich math classes.

It depends on your university. You should be able to find the academic policies on the university's website.

Many top schools will allow it IF you get permission before doing so, such as from the department where you need to meet a requirement. Sometimes there is the additional requirement that the summer college be a four-year school, not a CC.

See if you can find transfer credit info for your university from specific colleges you'd consider for the summer course. Sometimes your university might have a tool or check Transferology.com

The short answer is yes.
Some community offer online class, but there's a catch! My take away is to take the online at home school is better!!! So if it's a prerequisite but your summer class final grade is not ready at the base college. Then you can't sign up or register for the class in the fall which created lots of headaches! This is a heads up.

A lot of students take community college classes over the summer and transfer them into their university program. It's up to the university to accept the transfer credits but state schools will accept almost all community college classes as long as they have an equivalent class in their catalog. Community colleges also offer a lot of online options which makes the classes very accessible to those who are working.

I was able to transfer some summer grad school credits from where I was summering/working/going to school. My grad program just had a limit because of course they want most of the $$. But they took them; they were relevant to my degree. Don't remember how the grades worked.

Also, it may differ if it's a class intended for your student's major or minor — versus a class to fulfill distribution requirements in a different area.

Summer sessions are usually open to the public i.e. anyone who qualifies. That doesn’t guarantee that your home university or college would take the credit. Yoo should contact both institutions to make sure.

This is possible for students at my kid's SLAC – but what you have to do is get the class description & syllabus from the other school and send it to the SLAC's office before signing up, to make sure it's something that will be accepted for credit.

Schools almost always accept class credit from students who are studying abroad with a different school's program, so this isn't so different. As long as there's sufficient rigor, it should be okay – just check.

I don't know if I'm wording this correctly or not. And I know it's likely school dependent. But is it generally possible to take a college class during the summer period at another university? So, if kid is in school several hours (or more from home) and wants to be home to work or whatever in the summer and not stay on campus. But wants to complete a class over the summer and there is a college in/near where the student lives (so, around here, GMU for example). Is this usually permissible? Has anyone's kid done this?

Yes, I know kid has to ask but we are just talking it through now, that is, a planned path. The idea would be to take a really hard class but do it during the summer (if available) when there is no other class to juggle.
