Also, FWIW the fixtures cost $1,225 for the valve (heaviest, largest, but cheapest component), faucet and two handles (knobs).

These items will be cheapest at Lowes & Home Depot (we used Ferguson plumbing supply) as Lowes & Home Depot dictate the price level to the manufacturers (Phister, Moen, Kohler, and Delta at the most common brands).

Experienced folks told us that any handyman could switch out bathtubs, but that was not true. Some projects that seem simple could take licensed pros about 25 man hours to complete once the work begins & issues (typical issues) are revealed.

Will the current valve work with the new fixtures ? If not, hire a plumber or a handyman with experience changing valves, fixtures, and blue board & tile.

We just switched from an alcove bathtub to a free standing bathtub. Hired an experienced handyman to do the plumbing & tile work after the old tub had been removed. The two supposedly very experienced handymen gave up after 4 hours, but they did install a new P-trap. Ended up hiring a separate tile person (about 4 or 5 hours of work) and two licensed plumbers (combined 20 man hours of work).

If it really is just fixtures (knobs & faucet), then it should be fairly simple; however, most folks prefer to switch out the valve & old plumbing while checking for hidden leaks.

Would depend on the type of cartridge and set up and all. If you have the equipment and patience to learn before jumping in, then you could DIY. Be prepared for a hitch though.

changing fixtures is easy peasy. Just watch a youtube video. And since you asked the question, I'm assuming you're like me, not one of the usually UMC+ DCUMers, so saving nickels and dimes.

My dad raised us (4 daughters) to help him fix everything in the house so we all do our own house maintenance now. The only thing I usually stay clear of is the furnace, cuz it's gas.

Changing out my 25 year old shower head was a piece of cake. It literally just unscrewed.

Changing out my bathroom sink fixtures was manageable with some youtube videos. I'd gotten a quote that was something like >$1000 for a plumber to replace the p trap and the fixtures before I decided to do it myself. P trap + fixtures came to $100 and it took me a few hours as a first timer.

I don't know how I'd change out bathtub fixtures because it involves going behind the wall.

If you find stuff that fits your existing setup, it’s an easy DIY job. You can usually find a compatible shower head and the tub spout.

The faucet is trickier. If you can’t find a compatible trim, you need to replace the whole shower body, and it’s a job for the plumber, the wall needs to be opened, the tiles broken, the whole thing.

Your first step is to figure out what you have. Take pictures, take them to the local plumbing supply store. You can also try google.

I would talk to a plumber and or someone experienced to make sure you order the right components. Retrofitting something old that has been in place for years can be much more challenging than installing new. I asked my plumber about replacing those fixtures in our 1960s hall bathtub and it was costly and tiles would have to be removed and replaced. I decided to live with it until we do a full bathroom reno.

Hardware costs will vary wildly depending on what you pick. So spend some time deciding what you want first. Order it and then have a plumber install it rather than rely on the plumber to supply the hardware.

You don’t need a plumber, that’s bananas. Look in-store or online for a set you like that has hot, cold, and diverter. YouTube is chock-full of how-to videos that show how easy this is.

You need a plumber unless you have considerable experience. I’ll change a sink faucet myself, but I’d hire a plumber for this.

Take a look at Buid.com, the company that owns Ferguson's. We bought from them when we re-did our bathroom last year and as I recall, their prices were in line with every other place we checked and they have a huge selection.

And is it something I could do myself or do I need to hire someone? There are three knobs to the tub: hot, cold, and the one in the middle to turn the shower on. Plastic and old!
