My mom was as ED nurse and the only thing she ever forbade my brother and me from doing was getting on a motorcycle. Over drinking, drugs, speeding, seatbelts etc etc she always maintained motorcycles were the most dangerous.

My father was killed on one when a drunk, distracted driver (three unbuckled kids in the backseat) crossed out of her lane just before a traffic light and hit him directly. Ran him over at less than 30 mph. Was wearing helmet, driving safely, all the right things. If he had been in a car, he would have walked away.

Doctors call motorcycle helmets donor helmets for a reason. Absolutely not.

Brother-in-law was 18 and in his first few months of a very high-end, specialized trade school. He was in a motorcycle accident and damaged his hand such that he would never have the dexterity required for his field and had to drop out. He is now a heavy equipment operator, which is a good job but a far cry from the high end engine work he had dreamed of.

They are incredibly dangerous. Even if your child is extremely responsible and an excellent driver, bad road conditions can create a disaster. My great uncle, a retired city planner - hardly a daredevil, used to ride a motorcycle until he hit a patch of gravel wrong and ended up in the hospital.

That doesn’t even take into account all the other idiot drivers who drive their cars aggressively, under the influence, etc. Even if your child drives perfectly, there is no guarantee that someone else won’t run into them. A motorcycle against a car is badly outmatched and offers no protection to its rider.

Motorcycles are so dangerous. I would not be okay with that.

Would you let a 17yo who has been driving for two years get a motorcycle for local driving? I say no.
