Oglethorpe will match the cost of your flagship no matter what state you're from. Nice location in Buckhead. Much better than drab downtown Atlanta, where GSU is located. I'd pick it in a heartbeat.

+1 for Oglethorpe. We lived in Atlanta for eight years. Oglethorpe is private but is a good value for high gpa kids that want to go TO. In contrast, Georgia publics require test scores. Brookhaven is a safe area, the campus is lovely and it seems to be well managed.

Georgia State offers a fine education. We know multiple people with graduate degrees that are smart and accomplished. For undergrad, I'm not sure you're going to find cohesive school spirit. GSU is pretty much a commuter school and the area isn't great. Having said that, our DC took a few online classes there over a few summers and enjoyed them.

There was another thread recently. Good school for locals, but an incredibly ugly campus with mostly commuters.

Texas is much broader than Atlanta. If you can't speak for an entire city, you can't speak for an entire state.

I am from GA originally, lived in Atlanta fairly recently for 10 years, and am still pretty familiar.

I love Atlanta and it's a fine "place to be right now". But I don't know about moving there to attend GSU. Does he know what he plans to study?

Oh, maybe not. Like everywhere, it's neighborhood-dependent. Downtown is just not a place I personally feel comfortable and I wouldn't love it if my child wanted to attend a second-tier school there.

I currently live in GA, and anything but UGA, GT, and Emory, and...meh. I would not allow my kids to attend (but we're military and have no other association with the area, so take that with a grain of salt, I guess). Atlanta just isn't the place to be right now unless you're sucking it up for GT.

My ds has decided he wants to go to school in Atlanta. He is a good, solid student but not good enough for Georgia Tech, Emory...So Georgia State it is. Would you dissuade him? I am sure he can do a little better academically, and I am not crazy about being IN Atlanta. Are there any other southern Urbanish campuses for an A student with just ok scores? He really wants a big "fun" city, doesn't want colder weather.
