Troll.

No one outside the DMV area considers Duke in this group. Bay area people don't.

Wrong - They have started to pay attention to increase their odds of a T10 admission. Same for Vandy.

In the Bay Area parents start with ensuring their kids get into the most prestigious preschools and it goes on from there.
Since you don’t go to your local high school it gets even more competitive. People hire consultants for $5k plus to get their kids into the best elementary schools, and then typically switch to private middle and high. Seems many in SF have a lot of $$$ to still burn.

Every country and state has multiple towns/counties that are just as obsessed with school as the DMV, I mean look I grew up in Eastern Europe and certain areas of town were just as obsessed...however I have encountered only in the DMV that people think only the DMB/Bay Area and Boston are obsessed...so basically very provincial area I am in currently..

Very much so.

DMV is quite tame compared to the Bay Area or NY.

Maybe they just said that to justify paying less for a house?

I've always supposed it's a direct reflection of cost of living. Wealthy, educated parents see how expensive it is to raise a kid in a very high COL location, and get worried their kid won't be able to replicate the same success unless they have a particular brand name on their diploma.

Bay Area is ridiculously competitive compared to DMV. And for all the complaining about UVA, Berkeley and UCLA are also more competitive.

DMV comes in below NY, CT, NJ, CA, and MA.

It’s only a small % of parents here.

I was talking to some old college friends who are now in the Bay Area and they’re on another level it seems. Many of them are pushing their kids pretty hard to get Harvard, Stanford, Duke, Columbia, etc. Just goes to show it’s all relative
