I did see some Eccononic forecast that noted that there is a big avian flu wave. I think it’s just going to be a thing from now on. Eggs have always been ridiculously cheap protein. It seems like the caged eggs are still pretty cheap. I was told cage free are very susceptible for avian flu because they are outside walking around where the migrating birds can poop on them.

I bought 15 layer hens for $7 each recently. This vertical integration is serving our family well.

Agree with PP. I buy free range eggs/pasture raised eggs and per egg they’re still a cheap source of protein and iron. We have them for breakfast every day.

Poor chickens.

But eggs are still the cheapest healthiest perfect protein at the market.

It’s weird but Costco eggs have not gone up at all but Safeway and our local grocery stores have jumped up again. I really get the impression that grocery stores and their suppliers are always testing to find how far they can push it.

Noticed that egg prices where I shop have doubled since I last bought eggs a few weeks ago. CDC tracks avian flu but almost wish they had a graph. High egg prices also contribute to inflation in other grocery (and restaurant) items, although luckily I buy very, very few foods with more than minimal processing.

I'll have to remember to watch for Easter loss leaders and stock up (eggs keep way longer than people often think they do)
