Add digging tunnels in the snow to the danger list. And digging near sand dunes can cause dunes to collapse. Such a tragedy.

I don’t think two small children could dig a hole that big with a plastic pail; the hole must have already been there and they were playing in it. So Tragic, parents as spring break is almost here, please be aware and warn your children

If “so many people seem ignorant of this” then it’s not “common sense”. I hope this tragedy garners a lot of attention— so that people who are less familiar with beaches and the properties of sand can learn from it.

I had no idea. My kids usually play in the water at the beach rather than dig in the sand. But I've seen pictures of people burying each other - I had no idea that digging in the sand was dangerous.

Digging is not dangerous. Standing inside of a hole that can cover your torso is very dangerous. Burying with a few inches of sand while laying horizontally on the ground is not what we are describing here.

Something like this happened years ago and so I have been vigilant about how deep a hole my son could dig. I think I remember reading that it is almost impossible to dig people out because the weight of the people digging makes the hole just refill as they dig. That poor family!

This story is absolutely heartbreaking. Poor, precious little girl. Her brother was injured too but apparently will be OK.

Oh my gosh - this is my worst nightmare. My kids LOVE to bury themselves and inanimate objects at the beach. They've never tried to bury their faces or go super deep as far as I know, but this has spooked me into being super vigilant about this now.
