The world language 3 credits do help - it gives you 3 years of language (1,2,3) that appear in HS transcript. If your child is able to take a language AP in TJ, it completes 4 years of language at HS level. Mine did just that and college outcomes did not seem impacted. Check with your TJ counselor just in case hopefully when your child gets in.

So as I understand it, my kid (whether it gets into TJ or not) has 2 options for HS:
a. Don't take any other 3rd language at all and remain with the 3 credits received from the exam, and use the time to take other courses instead
b. Start a 3rd language from scratch and aim for an AP language exam

So basically my question now is what is the best strategy for a good college application..?

College admissions may view the three exam-only credits taken as pass/fail as nearly equivalent earning no language credits at all. They could infer that the student likely faced challenges in completing three (or preferably four) full years of language study for a letter grade, as expected of high school graduates. This could potentially make the student's application less competitive compared to thousands of other applicants who have completed a world language course for a letter grade.

Foreign language credits are evaluated for their own merit, and substituting a few math or science courses in its place is unlikely to fill the void. Just google and read up on why top universities look for 4 years of foreign language even for non-liberal arts majors, ... a debatable topic.

Thanks for confirming

Technically the three credits pass/fail meet the FCPS or TJ minimum graduation requirement. But then top segment of TJ students complete four years of world language for letter grade, as well as associated AP exam, which also makes their college application competitive.

So as I understand this, if a student wants to have a "competitive" college application, then the world language exam credits do not help at all since the student needs to take another world language anyway and the AP exam in high school?

What language was the AP course/exam in? and at what high school?

Our language is not among those offered in FCPS high schools
https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high/world-languages

So I guess that leaves us just with starting with another language from scratch..

Student can enroll in World Language 4 for letter grade, and follow it up with AP exam, in the same language they took the exam only for 3 credits pass/fail. But this depends on how comfortable they are doing the WL 4, since the exam only does not test all aspects of WL3 or even WL2 full year course. You can request the world language teacher to evaluate and recommend whether to enroll in WL2, 3, 4, or AP full year course. or start from year 1 of an entirely different language.

My 7th grader took the world language exam this year and got 3 credits. Our counselor said that there is no need to take a language elective in 8th grade. How does this affect the TJ application in 8th grade?
From my understanding it does not affect it, but just wanted to confirm.
Thanks
