+1 or, if you want to share your enthusiasm for the particular things that made your kid pick that school. DD goes to a LAC lots haven't heard of but they have a really unique program she loves for her major which I am happy to tell people about if I get a "why?" question (even if the why is not meant sincerely!)

Could use some specific wording here. "This school is perfect for them, and we're very proud of their achievement" isn't shutting them down.
Shrug. Say, "Good point. Talk to DC". Shrug again. Indifference is better than defensiveness, which is what you were going for.
