I have super high achieving kids and moms are always trying to figure out what is going on with them: I just look at them earnestly and say: "we are praying for them."

Yes! I know moms like this. I caught one cheering against my kid (and for her kid) on a track meet video I shot last year. Her daughter burst into tears when my kid beat her in one race, it was so over the top. Neither of these kids is going to the Olympics but you wouldn't know it from this mom. She is like that about everything - school acceptance, school work, etc. I feel bad for the kid.

I feel like people temp karma when they're super competitive or braggy about their kids.
One of my friends had a kid sign up for the Marines. She was sure he was going to win the award for the top Marine in that boot camp.
He didn't. She constantly bragged about his "corporate" job, but he worked in a three person office.

He's now in prison for manslaughter.

I have learned that people as annoying as this mom and the one OP talks about always get their comeuppance. All you have to do is sit back and wait.

This is why we go to public school. I can't stand many private school parents. Even my older friends who used to be fun have turned insufferable after sending their kids to private school.

ugh. I hate competitive people as well as people who think top tier schools translate to guaranteed later success and non top tier schools mean lack thereof. Sounds insufferable.

So? Don't worry about her and her kid. Focus on yours.

So? Just ignore her. Or better yet, it might be good for your soul to try to be happy for her when her kid is accepted (you are clearly hoping they won't be out of some obsessive bitterness).

My advice is to just ignore. My neighbor across the street is extremely competitive and always talking about her kids and how well they're doing, our sons are the same age and so she constantly is trying to get information on my kid so she can do her little comparisons. And I know that's what she's doing because I see what she does to othersand she openly talks about how awesome her kid is and then whispers "and did you know so and so kid did x..." I don't give her any ammunition to say anything negative about my kid, so I just smile and say my kid is doing great even if he isn't and change the subject or focus on how great her kid is as she's always happy to talk about her kid

Who cares? Maybe you should focus on your own family more and cancel out the noise.

I hear that- we have some friends who are so hyper focused on getting kid into top tier school, and eager to make comparisons. Our kid is not feeling same pressure from peers as their kid so is more relaxed about it, as are we. Thankfully, others in the group are also relaxed. Face to face DCUM IRL is no fun!
