Why would anyone pick UMD honors over say Cornell? Seems laughable when most would choose the latter.

Because even OOS, UMD honors is $25K less than Cornell. Cornell is a dismal place, not very welcoming. Winters are long and dreary. It's really difficult to get to/from unless driving.
My kid did not like Cornell or the programs there. Weather they could have lived with (they are 2 hours away in very similar weather, but are only 5 mins from the airport and in a bigger city)

PP My kid is currently a freshman at UMD from VA too. SLIGHTLY higher stats is in Honors. I wonder if UMD is placing in particular LLPs based on potential fit/interests rather than some sort of "qualification". Many UMD families will confirm that honors, Carillon, scholars etc are no big deal. Most programs are 1-2 years. It's still early, but the best part from what I've seen is just an opportunity for my kid to meet people and develop friendships. Really important since we aren't from MoCo , Howard or Baltimore.

I'm the poster with the kid whose stats were called Ivy material. Meh, it's really not her dream. She was deferred to Swarthmore which was her first choice (ED1). She has applied to a number of schools across the range, but UMD is a great option. Direct admit to Smith, cheap tuition, and lots of opportunities on campus. We are not ruling it out at all, regardless of where else she is admitted. But this idea that high stats gets you in is a myth. Colleges are looking to build a "class" and have lots of criteria. A strong student with good extracurriculars is not enough--it just gets you in the lottery. Right now UMD is her top choice, but RD decisions could change that.

12 APs, 3.9UW - 4.85W GPA, 1500 SAT, strong ECs. We were hoping for honors but only got Carillon

The good state university honors programs now attract HYS-level donut hole kids. This is probably especially true for very high stats donut hole kids. The Maryland honors program kids are probably a lot smarter than the average HYS kid.

Princeton, MIT and Cal Tech have much better aid than HYS (or, at least, Harvard and Yale; never tried the Stanford aid calculator) and might still be getting a lot of very bright donut hole kids.

But, at this point, for true donut hole kids in states with great flagships, Harvard and Yale are for status-chasing losers. They’re kids who’ll bankrupt their parents because it would be too painful to get a top education and be treated like a king at Maryland.

Going to Harvard might might sense for a donut hole kid with the University of Nebraska for the flagship who wants to become a philosophy professor , but absolutely not for a Maryland kid who just wants to be a doctor or a lawyer.

DS told me today he was accepted but not to honors. 12 AP classes, 1510 SAT, 4.37W GPA (3.97UW). We are in VA. What did he do wrong?
