My DD did Zearn last summer and it worked well. She wasn't able to take the SMAC course because of summer work and she was able to complete the course in an hour or so a day. Zearn students have to take the same test the SMAC students take to test into Algebra 1 and she passed it, so the course did what it was aimed to. It was not overwhelming for her and she worked on her own (no study group).

I think it's great that the school now is doing this because it allows more access to students to algebra (who can't do SMAC because of work or distance/ transportation issues).

I just said yes since we have no plans to switch schools. It may be that this form was copied from last year's at the end of the year.

Can the zearn course only be done during the summer? Or can it be done during the year as well?

The main piece that seems to impact differences in how long students I knew took on it was if they needed to review and retake the assessments at the end of each unit. Otherwise, each individual lesson was fairly short. Some did one unit per week, others condensed it into one half of the summer or the other to work around camps and family trips.

The length of time it takes depends on the amount of time your student puts in per day. With moderate other activities, 2 units per week is a reasonable amount. We completed the course over the summer by making a calendar based on units around 3 scheduled weeks of "off" time.

The Zearn course is very independent and a bit of a chore. I would recommend creating some study group interaction around the units if there are other students also taking the course. The school does not organize this, but I would imagine it's something the parents could do.

Hardy doesn't offer SMAC, but maybe they can offer this?

Has anyone’s Deal kid done the self paced Zearn math course in the summer in lieu of SMAC? If so how was it and how long did the course take?
