I’m a woman and my salary was similar before and after kids so I’m not sure his point
In some careers that’s a standard trajectory whether or not a person kids.

Since having kids my husband has increased his income by 60k and has been promoted twice. And he’s the default parent that does all the drop off and pick ups lol.

I’m similar. SME Fed refusing to take management roles.
I have looked at startups and some corporate roles, but honestly the money and stability were never enough to enable DW to quit outright, so we’re not feasible with 3 kids and 2 working parents. Without kids I know we would have worked at a variety of startups and probably lived in at least 3 other parts of the country based on the job offers I’ve had but turned down because I was wary of the impact on the family and the money wasn’t high enough to grease those skids (obv if I’m making $1M there would be options like two residences and flying back and forth, etc).

I do all of the sick days, school holidays, etc. so I need to be in a flexible job. I declined to pursue a manager role although honestly being a fed manager seems like it sucks anyways so I possibly would have made the same choice regardless.

Well let's see. In the last 6 years I had 2 HORRIBLE pregnancies (HG puking 10+ times per day, preeclampsia, and cholestasis aka incessant itching from inside my body), one resulted in a premie. I had 5 weeks off unpaid after my 1st and 6 weeks off unpaid after my 2nd. Nursed/pumped for 12-14 months each. My pay in that time period went from 78k to 96k and I still have 2 weeks vacation time and 5 sick days per year.
During the same time, DH has gone from 90k to 215k and went from 2 weeks PTO to 5 weeks vacation, 12 sick days.
