Make it fun and exciting. Have a letter of the week, so a fun activity with a letter sound craft and play with things that start with that letter.

I agree with previous posters that it’s too early to be pushing letters.

Keep reading to him. Getting him to associate books with fun is great.

Do language type things with him for fun (not as lessons). Sing songs, tell him nursery rhymes and tongue twisters. It will help him develop a better sense for sound patterns. Once he’s used to rhymes, if he’s interested, you can play rhyming games together.

Talk about books, TV shows, movies, etc., just as conversation not as lessons.

Expose him to as much as you can. Reading is part decoding and part comprehension. When the time EVENTUALLY comes, it will be crucial that he gets phonics. If you can sound out words efficiently, you can read anything you could understand somebody telling you. The more things you expose him to now, the more context he’ll have for the words he reads. Read him books about fire trucks, maybe take him somewhere he can see one - that will help later to read books about fire trucks on his own. Basically, everything for him right now is a learning experience. Explore his interests as far as he wants (even if you get tired of them) and expose him to as many different things as possible so he can discover new interests.

Hate to be sexist but boys don’t usually like to write rigid things like letters. Not every boy but it’s common at that age.

I teach 4s. You don’t NEED to teach this. I only encourage you to do so if you can be relaxed about it, make it fun. He likes fire trucks? Fire truck abc books. When he tells you the name of the trucks, write them out for him so he can see it.
Or say “oh, that’s a ladder truck? L, l that sounds like the letter l.” Point out whenever you see the first letter in his name. 4s are so egocentric, they can’t resist hunting for “their” letter. If he’s ready, this will be the launchpad for learning. If he’s not, let it go.

Fun books like Boom Chicka boom. Also just ask him things like “what’s that?” At street signs and never tell hum the answer and make him slowly realize there’s a code out there to solve. Also relax. And if you can’t, fyi I found this book to be truly great:

This set would be excellent for teaching letter names. A kid who can use a book to distinguish similar items from each other might be persuaded to play with these characters using their "real names". Also maybe you could work in phonics by having the creatures communicate using calls that go with the letter. For example, letter O could say "Oh" and "Ooh" and "Ah".

School will make it fun for him - I wouldn't stress about trying to teach him in advance, it doesn't end up getting him anywhere any faster

Read to him and let him be.

He is awfully slow at it and disinterested and does not take it seriously. Put anything else in front of him of interest like a book about fire trucks and he will focus upon it and tell you later about the different types of fire trucks with ease.
