Assuming NCS doesn’t have families for whom this would be a significant amount to lose.

I think it will play out just fine. We have no problem paying the deposit. My daughter is at NCS and plans on returning and staying.

Now the rest of the community that is not dumb enough to leave $5000 on the table will think hard about their decisions.

They should think hard about their decisions. The school has to plan accordingly class sizes, instructor size, and more importantly believe it or not there is a wait list pretty much to get in for almost every year. There are kids applying to transfer in from other schools and what not. I can think of at least a few that transferred in from other schools in highschool.

Actually I have a friend who will now probably say "no" and take the chance at Walls (with JR as a back-up) vs. lose this $5K. I have another friend at Basis who will likely do the same.
NCS actually enrolls quite a few 9th graders who are coming from public and/or who are also considering public magnets for 9th. They're different than STA in this regard. $5K is a lot to lose for this type of family.

Maybe NCS is fine with this and they want to transition to being more of only the financially-elite (vs. being the destination for the two fed family who sacrifices to make tuition work).
But enrolling super smart (with parents who are professionals but not super wealthy) public schoolers in 9th has sort of been quite commonplace there for the past 5 years or so.
Many (most?) of their top graduates in recent years came from public in 9th.

That makes complete sense. Too many people were ambivalent about walking away from $1000. I don't have kids at the cathedral schools, but I expect this will become the new norm and the more competitive schools
