This is one situation where the cops should get a pass. Excessive yes, but I would still exonerate them if I was on that jury.

Who breaks into their apartment if they lose or don't have their keys? Wouldn't you go to the front desk or if they are not available get a hotel room for the night? Wouldn't they have to pay for the broken window which would cost more than a hotel for the night?
