Yeah, Penn State does this a lot. Colleges come up with all sorts of ways to not directly reject in hopes to keep them as possible recipients of your college fund dollars. University of Maryland does something similar by offering lots of kids admission....but for the spring semester (starting in January).

Not worth it to pay out of state fees for a Penn State branch campus. If in-state and on a budget, Behrend is an excellent choice. I think it was an independent college at one point, so it has a real campus and isn't just commuters like many of the other branches.

Not only Penn State many large flagships do this.

From what I can gather, it's a separate campus but that there are 22 campuses and Behrend College specialises in engineering (under grad and post grad).

Your DC got this offer most likely due to the choice of major.

Have you visited? It's described as a really nice campus, particularly in the Fall.

I think you must be aware of the difference in acceptance rate between UP and B and that's what is troubling you. I would just investigate as much as you can about this specific college because it still could be a really good option for your kid.

That is disappointing, I didn't realize they did that. I hope has some other acceptances to other schools he would be excited to attend.

I'm sorry. It is unfortunately an extremely common tactic for Penn State to offer admission to one of the other campuses. Your son shouldn't be embarrassed, but certainly fair to be disappointed.

They offer this instead of waitlisting.
