There are well located housing at West, and some better options for classes/discussion sections as well as some targeted social opportunities. One need not stay with the Honors Program after freshman year and as a PP noted, if the student is tending towards more STEM type stuff, they may prefer to live in North Campus anyhow.

My understanding is that most honor programs provide more favorable time slots for course registration, which at a big school can be totally worth it. And as a pp mentioned they might get preferred housing options.

Honors college, which admitted students can now apply for, has nothing to do with getting honors on your degree. That's separate.

Exactly. If your kid wasn't already going to such a great school where the vast majority of kids were already coming from a rigorous academic background and the classes are already at an "honors" level, there's something to an honors college.

*You* would like him to? Does he want to? My daughter was also admitted OOS and we've let her decide this for herself, and she's leaning against it. It's a 10% admission rate after already beating impressive odds to get in in the first place. Seem to be some legitimate pros and cons.

The biggest benefit to honors that I saw was housing in the middle of Central Campus. If your kid is doing tech and engineering though many classes may be on North(?) campus. Some small discussion sections also offered at honors campus. So a nice benefit but not overwhelming.
