I just took DS (8th) to shop for his new girlfriend this weekend. DD helped him pick out a necklace and chocolates.
You’re right, OP, he was pretty lost in the store. He knew enough to ask me to take him but that was about it.

DD makes it sound super common (she doesn’t have a BF). The kid she was helping is apparently hiding it from his parents because they’re super strict and would not approve of the girl otherwise (they’re very religious and she’s a different religion).

I have a 13 year old 8th grade boy and neither he nor his friends are shopping for valentine's day gifts. I don't think any of his friends have girlfriends (or boyfriends).

I have older teens plus a 13 year old and I've never heard of such a situation. Most 13 year old boys aren't roaming the aisles looking for random crap to give to their "girlfriends".

Shopping for Valentines Day for their BF/GF, check what they’re buying. Or ask them to take a friend of the opposite gender with them.
My 13 year old was asked by a male friend if she could help him shop for his GF. He got there first and had time to wander around and collect stuff. DD said that what he had picked up were pimple patches (his GF has clear skin and didn’t need any) and the world’s ugliest plushie. She made him put it back, and helped him choose more appropriate things within his budget. She also gave him a cute basket and some unopened candy she had so he wouldn’t have to spend money on those things, and showed him how to arrange everything so it makes a good presentation.
While helping this kid, she ran into two other boys she knew that were there on the same mission, and while they had good enough sense to not get pimple patches, they didn’t know what to get, beyond candy/chocolate. She helped them out as well.
