Just want to point out the frequency of x-rays is patient dependent. Never had a cavity? Every 3 years (or more!) is fine. Have a mouth full of dental work? Every year is needed, maybe even every 6 months if you have a new cavity every time you go in. You can’t make blanket statements about the frequency of x-rays for everyone.

My kid had a CT scan for a head injury when he was a toddler. I limit them due to cumulative radiation. I’m very cautious about that.

I was getting them every single year and in my 50 years not once did they notice anything on an X-ray.
I limit them for my kids. If they need it for ortho- I have them send it to dentist. But it’s about every 3 years now with a 16 and 18 year old.

I had a radiologist explain to me that X-rays changed and they weren’t like the old X-rays. Something about it being a different form.

If you’re that worried, ask them to use the apron on you and your children. Call ahead to make sure they still use them upon request. I doubt they’re going to have thrown them in the trash.

I’m still going to refuse because even if the lead apron provides no marginal protection *to my abdomen*, it’s still uneccesary radiation *to my head*. I see the dentist 2-3x/year for cleanings and there’s no suprise lurking they need to xray for every year.

The ADA and JADA came out and said that the lead apron is completely unnecessary and the amount of radiation absorbed is negligible. So what are you going to say the next time at the dental office they don’t put it on or if you refuse to take them once a year citing concerns of radiation?
