Harpers Ferry is a good day trip.

If the weather is nice, maybe Mt. Vernon? It's dog friendly too if you have one.
Old Town could be cute for lunch/shopping.

Go to Tyson's? That's for middle schoolers. My college kids want to go to Georgetown, Union Market, the Waterfront, or Adams Morgan. They want to go to trendy bars/restaurants. See what exhibits are at the Renwick. They often have very instagramable exhibits and it usually only takes 30-45 minutes to check them out. I agree with hiking in Shenandoah or Great Falls. Send them to Eastern Market on a Sat. or Sun. morning. Also, a self-guided tour of the monument at night is always a big hit.

I can’t remember but I am virtually certain we hung with guys from college who were also from DC and her friends from HS too. We probably did some DC tourist stuff on our own too. It’s hard to remember this trip exactly we also moved to DC together after college so everything is blurring together. Her parents were two high powered career people so I just know they were working while we were there. But she lived in DuPont Circle so everything was nearby.

Museum of the Marine Corps (free, plenty of parking)
and Prince William Forest National Park is very close by (there is a fee for the park)

I went to college out of state and went home freshman year spring break with a friend from DC and I’m just saying we did not want her mom planning anything - we wanted to do whatever we wanted to do.

Do a hike in Shenandoah National Park.

Visit Great Falls Park.

DD is in college out of state. She and a few friends took me up my offer to host spring break in DC the second week of March (the three friends have never been to DC). I'm sure one day they'll do museum and monuments. Maybe cherry blossoms will be out. I'm looking for some suggestions for out of the way, interesting places for day or evening visits in DC or VA from my house in VA. They are all science-engineering majors. Asking mostly bc I want my daughter to see something new too. They will have a car. TIA!
