I am obviously upset with DS more than the teacher but I want to know what is far to expect from the teacher here.

This doesn’t sound right and I would also expect some type of communication in advance if this were my child.

You didn't look at any of his assignments throughout the marking period? A C doesn't come out of nowhere.

There is Grade Book (which is blank for me) and a subcategoy Daily Assignments with a thousand individually clickable pages with one grade on each.

It's trash. Email the teacher. C grades should be coming home on paper.

OP again. I can see the grades in ParentVue for Compacted Math (and those were fine), but there isn’t even an entry for the regular classroom. And I have never seen a single graded paper from the regular teacher either.

Good to know it is happening elsewhere though - that might be a reasonable thing to ask. Thanks, all!

No graded work comes home outside math class. I know MS is different and kids are rightly expected to take more ownership at that stage (I have an older kid).

I am not worried in a long term sense - it’s ES and the grades doesn’t matter/impact anything except my kid’s self-esteem, which I can handle. I am worried in the sense that we need to nip whatever this is in the bud, but that’s different.

Sorry. Had read DS11 in fifth... as DS, 11 now, had all As when she was in 5th, and figured she probably was in 6th now. Good that you are involved, and definitely ask for a teacher conference, to understand both what might be happening and how you can stay informed in a more timely manner.

So l have ES kids and there are grades in ParentVUE. Choose grade book and then at the top right where it says “MP3 interim” choose MP2. Then choose a subject and choose MP2 and then “expand all”. Both my 4th grader and my 5th grader (at different schools) have individual assignments listed there.

My ES kids get grades on parentvue - you have to click through a few pages but there are a decent amount of grades posted, plus we get work home from every subject with grades written on it. I didn't actually know they were there until this year so apologies if I'm telling you something you already know - it was news to me. If there are actually no grades coming home or on ParentVue, I would ask the teacher if they can start so that you can track progress as you work with your DS to raise the grade the following marking period.

And you’re not getting any graded papers home from school? You can absolutely email the teacher and set up a parent teacher conference to find out what is happening. I think it’s the right thing to do and might help you get information on how you can help your daughter.

Did they regularly post assignment grades to ParentVUE (grade book) and you didn't/didn't know to/didn't want to check, or did they wait to enter the data at the last minute, catching you by surprise? Could it be that the last few assignments were terrible, bringing an otherwise decent grade down all of a sudden at the end?

It can be hard for MS teachers to have dedicated communications with parents across the entire student population. They should, at least, be providing regular feedback directly to the student, though, and should be having a conversation with them if they notice considerable deterioration in performance.

I would expect communication for a failing grade. C is not a failing grade.

This is not meant to sound rude at all. But, you have access to ParentVUE where you can monitor and look at all of her grades. Is she missing assignments? Is she bombing quizzes? Do you have the information at your finger tips.

My kid is in 6th and was on the high honor roll last year ( all As all year) this year she’s got 2 Cs… a C is not the end of the world. 90 % is an A and 79% is a C. Only 11 points difference.

This is public school. There will be no advance warning. By all means, communicate with the teacher about the Cs. That's not normal in elementary school. You want to know if it's lack of understanding, or more likely, failure to hand in the work. Different scenarios require different solutions.
