Check if you husband wants a watch or a multi-function device. I know a lot of guys who prefer having an Apple Watch or fancy FitBit or other fancy smart watch vs the fancy watches, but it really depends on the person whose going to wear it. Many of the folks I know prefer the expensive smart watch to the fancy watch.

Go to Hodinkee and start looking. My husband has slowly become a watch guy; we don’t have the disposable income for him to live his “watch guy” dreams but they all seem to be highly specific in their tastes. (His first “real” watch is a Jaeger-LeCoultre). Good luck!

For men's watches, I really like the simple Patek Calatrava in gold. My DH alternates between a Parmigiani Tonda and a Rolex Sub.

Grand Seikos are a great recommendation, there's a saying that people wear rolexes to impress other people but wear a GS to impress themselves.

In general whatever brand you go for, would go for a mechanical or automatic (i.e. a watch that you wind yourself (mechanical) or a watch that winds itself when you move your wrist (automatic)), versus a quartz (runs on a battery).

Quartzes are fine and are actually more accurate, but the automatics/manuals have cool workmanship with the movements that make them interesting. Just my opinion. Good luck on your search, as you can prob tell I would love it if my wife got me a nice-but-not-too-expensive watch like this. Nice sweet spot where I wouldn't be too nervous to wear it b/c of potential damage or theft, but nice enough that it makes a statement.

What's his style? How and when would he wear it? Does he wear a watch now? Is he an academic? C-suite? Outdoorsy? James Bond or Tim the Tool man type?

As mentioned Hamilton is good in this price range. Junghans, Sinn and Christopher Ward also have some good stuff. Some of the Seiko Alpinists are cool as well.

If you're up for it there's also vintage stuff in this price range that are pretty interesting. If you can go up to $1500, you can pick up a used Grand Seiko, those are really nice watches with great workmanship. Good value for money.
