Inheritance isn’t automatically considered separate, you have to put it into an account that isn’t held jointly. Anything that goes into a joint account is definitely marital property. Not sure about any other rules, but that’s an obvious one.

That's a good plan. My ILs always gave my spouse a large check for Christmas and I got some chocolates. We always laugh because it went right into our joint account. I suspect this was for the benefit of other family members.

I plan on gifting my only child 18k a year when she is done with school and has started working. The only condition is that she maximizes her Roth/403 investment vehicle. My Dad got me started investing at a young age and it's one of the main reasons I am able to retire at a youngish age.

I’m the adult child but we get the maximum exclusion every year, from each parent, but not to our spouses. Honestly idk why and it’s fine because we all have plenty of money.

The biggest gifts haven’t been cash transfers but instead debt free educations and loans from trusts for houses.

You can each give 18k to your kids annually.
