My kid is in VT/biology major/pre-med track. We chose VT as we received full tuition merit aid and can save for medical school. Lot of research opportunities in the campus, franklin biomedical @Roanoke, VTCSOM@Roanoke (medical school), VCOM(osteopathic school). If we did not get tuition free, we would have picked UPitt.

My DC is at UMass Amherst in bio and it’s a terrific program. Lots of research going on. DC is probably going to do a semester abroad at one of the research institutes in Germany. I can’t speak to the other schools, but they are probably equally good, so it might come down to the level of merit your DC gets?

Great options ... Pitt is a terrific city for a kid seeking research opportunities!

You don't need to go to a school with a medical school to do biology/pre-med.

All excellent choices. Although UMass medical school is not in Amherst, UMass-Amherst may have pipelines to great internships in Boston area. Probably solid internship opps in Pittsburgh too. I do not know if VT has a medical school - but UVA and VCU do, so maybe there is some cooperation between the in-state VA colleges. And as far as VT being the in-state option, cost matters even more when you are looking and many years of medical school.

Any aid offered at any school? Comparing the cost of attendance, the courses/curriculum and then how grads fare in achieving what your student intends to do all seem important.

Great if VT works, but if Pitt is offering you aid that matches, then you consider all the items above. You still may end up in-state but the numbers may matter to you (or not).

We are lucky to have good options. Would appreciate feedback on these schools for biology/pre-med track with an understanding that the kid wants to pursue PhD. in medical research.
