I don’t care. I pull out my phone and calculate on the pre-tax amount.

Whoever set up our system also added tip that included the tax. I don't know if it got changed. It really wasn't a big deal for the longest time because we hardly ever added tip but for big parties. We also didn't have the new 3.5% fee that goes to cover costs.
The ones who complain, you clearly eat out too often. I wouldn't be happy with all the fees and service charges and gratuity and tip. Actually, food is bad in most places, that 's why I don't eat out.
Please stay home. Let the lousy restaurants that are not busy enough to die out. Every small restaurant owner I have ever worked for, owes their workers money. Should have done the math. So, several reason for them to go under. Plenty of other ways to make money, instead of cheating workers, adding fees, and offering crap.

I do. Stop nickle and diming me to death with this asinine attitude. It's multiple extra dollars on top of service charge fees and already grossly inflated restaurant prices.

Using your logic, who cares about credit transaction fees and convenience fees when you're paying your electric bill or buying a concert ticket? Just keep giving out al your money to greedy money grabbers because it is only a few dollars, right?

It adds up to a lot over time.

Another way to control this is to either pay in cash or tip in cash. That's typically what I do.

This is clearly a programming default. The question is whether the restaurants have the option to choose pre- or post-tax.

We generally don't eat out anymore because of the whole tipping thing. Better for our wallet and our waistlines.

Yes it's very annoying. They're counting on most people either being unable to calculate in their heads or not caring enough to look closely.

Can you ask for a paper receipt so you can read it? I really don’t know. I don’t like sitting there while the server is hovering over me while I read the receipt to make my calculations.

Why do so many restaurants include taxes into the calculations for a 20% tip? We all know how it works, they come around with their iPads or other electric devices for paying the bill,then the screen comes with the 20, 22, or 25% tip buttons, but if you actually calculate the tip it is inflated by even more because they now expect you to include taxes into the calculations for tips. And this is already on top of service fees, recovery fees, and other ludicrous charges they keep tacking on and tell you that those don't count either towards tips.

Eating out in the US has gotten so nerve grating with grossly inflated tipping culture.
