I'm an educated person and I read the link OP posted. It's interesting information but OP's conclusion is highly alarmist (in the gentlest wording). Is she right? It's possible but the data doesn't support her conclusion.

This is basically the premise of that movie with Jake gyllenhall where NYC freezes over because the jet stream just stops working.

On the politics point, I have a close relative that is one of the top globally recognized scientists studying climate change for the last 30 years. They have some crazy stories to tell about government reports on which they worked being substantially censored or rewritten in the last two Republican administrations. This is a person that has testified in front of congress multiple times, you’ve read them quoted in papers etc. they say that they basically can’t think about this stuff when they go home from work because it’s too depressing.

One of the sad things is that of course this is ill qllcjaut accelerate the problems because people up north will burn more fuel to stay warm and people at the equators will be increasingly dependent on a/c to survive as daytime highs start to exceed human tolerance.

I was a zoology major for a few years decades ago so have a better grasp of the global warming science than many people do - I studied ecology with a now dead professor who has a mountain in Antarctica named after him, he was warning us about Hansen’s predictions then and of course things have only unfolded worse than Hansen predicted.

It gives me great peace that I had no children.

As a child I was a fan of the New England poet Robert Frost and these days I wonder which will be worse, to die in fire or in ice?

np: I dunno. Read "Five Times Faster." We need to be hearing more about the possible catastrophes, not just the most-likely predictions.

This is shocking news. Recent studies have shown that the Atlantic conveyor belt has continued to behave robustly despite concerns, although the Indian conveyor belt was looking wobbly. Now the Atlantic conveyor belt has suddenly stopped?

I realize most of you are not scientists and the article and data in the link are pretty inside-baseball, but the synopsis is basically that Arctic sea ice, which was has been steadily declining over the decades because of global warming, has now suddenly begun forming extremely rapidly after getting off to a slow start. Sea ice coverage is currently at the highest level in 21 years and expanding rapidly.

This means the ocean heat cycle, which on the east coast of North America brings warmer water up from the tropics and melts sea ice in the Arctic, appears to have suddenly reduced to a trickle, causing ice to suddenly begin forming at a record pace. This will likely mean a much colder summer for most of northern and continental Europe, with a dramatically shortened growing season in far northern agricultural areas.

The water in the tropics is now so hot that it’s no longer flowing north in the Gulf Stream, which has caused the ice to suddenly form, while at the same time priming the Caribbean and southern US for a hurricane season that could begin as early as March, instead of June.

The end result will be a rapid accumulation of ice in the poles over the next decade as the planet gets hotter and hotter in the temperate and tropical regions, which will cause the polar regions to get much, much colder and the extremes get farther apart. The colder polar regions will see a rapid, massive build up of ice which will cause sea levels to begin to fall quickly, stranding many coastal communities from the water, causing problems with shipping and trade, as well as an increase in airborne dust and pollution as tidal flats become exposed and dry out as the sea level falls. In the tropics the effects will be exactly the opposite, as the ocean currents cease and water starts to pile up, with local sea levels rising quickly and inundating coastal cities.

And based on the data localized to ice formation on Hudson Bay over December, where formation began 12-15 days later than normal but then exceeded all previous records for formation, these changes will take place much faster than anticipated. In short, we will have a much different looking planet by Nov 4, 2024.

All of this destruction we are about to see will have brought to us by one madman who’ll stop at nothing to get back into power. And it will be the fault of anyone who votes for the republican ticket.
