They all want to be the standout stars so they don't pass, they shoot and air ball, they try to hit 3s when they can't. Coaches are looking for kids who can communicate, get open, make thoughtful passes. It's not all about shooting, folks. Tell yer kids that!!

And many coaches overlook good team players at tryouts bc they are distracted by flash.

OP here. We are new to this AAU world. It is my understanding that the majority of the team is all returning and they have these tryouts to fill a few spots.

My kid plays point guard, which I believe many kids play and is always already filled before tryouts even begin.

Is this in general or are you talking about a specific team?

In general. From my understanding many/most/all? AAU teams have mostly returning players and only looking for few specific players.

If you are not a stand out, you won’t make the team. My son didn’t make a team recently and knows two kids who are equal or worse than DS. One kid was already on the team who DS swears he is better than. He may be slightly better but the coach isn’t going to bump a kid for a kid who is slightly better. He would need to be substantially better.

They are also looking at the team as a whole - how the kids play together, etc.

Point guard is the toughest position to find a spot for.

One exception to all of this is if the team/club is going to form additional teams. Or if they lose players to better teams. Turnover does happen---on some teams more than others.
