What other schools have a comparable scholarship?

1693 is similar imo

It seems like an amazing and prestigious scholarship. There are thousands of nominees and only 30 kids get it

It's not crazy if you understand how it came to be. It was started solely by alums who wanted to give these very generous scholarships in order to lure to UVA students that otherwise might go Ivy. My DS got his school nomination and made it to regionals but not to the finals, which are actually done at UVA. A friend of his (same church) did get it, though. By the way, your high school has to be a "nominating school" which requires paperwork to be filed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Scholarship

The real craziness (which has happened) is when a Jefferson Scholar does not get admitted to UVA

Yep. I know a kid who got it and turned it down for Princeton.
It makes zero sense for a kid to get turned down for UVA after being impressive enough to get this scholarship. (?)

Yield protection by UVA admissions office.

The Robertson Scholarship (a foundation scholarship) for Duke and UNC offers a similar package to the Jefferson Scholarship. However, you don't need a nomination. The vetting process for both of these scholarships is very similar.

The Jefferson Scholarship foundation is a completely separate entity from UVA, lots of other schools that added comparable named scholarships are using their own dollars

Came to say this/above. Also, while underlying 3 criteria remain same, regional areas have separate interview and selection processes to get to the final rounds (for both Jeff scholars and walentas). It is NOT the school running this scholarship selection. Different from Echols and Miller’s Arts.

My kid was a finalist 5+ years ago

#1 in high school class, 35 ACT/1560 SAT, captain of 2 sports, NSLI-Y Scholar

Lost out to someone who went on to also receive a Rhodes Scholarship, so gotta say good call to the regional selection committee!

Didn’t go to UVA

Happens all the time. The processes are completely separate.

Just curious if your child has been a recipient or finalist? What does it take?
