We need better police training and different ways of dealing with many people in the criminal justice system system, but that slogan is costing us elections.

I agree with you on both.

Most left-wing: abortion should not be an issue we should legislate at all. We should leave it up to the woman and the healthcare system. Or at a minimum do something like France where it’s fine up to 14 weeks or whatever and then you need a note from another doctor saying it’s fine. Personally, I think it should be longer than 14 weeks but that approach has basically made it very accessible to get an abortion in France. - Climate change is real and serious, and we need urgent governmental action to combat it.
- Strong public education is a critical public good. Teachers should be well-paid. Teachers should have a good pension, should be able to make a lifelong career of teaching, and should feel safe in their classrooms.
- Gun control is necessary and guns are a massive public health threat.
- Abortion is healthcare and reproductive rights are critical to women’s health and safety. The campaign against abortion is a campaign to harm women and children. Forcing a raped child or adult woman to have a child is state-sanctioned torture.
- The death penalty can never be equitably applied and innocent people have been executed, so it should be banned.

Right:
- Crime is a serious issue and it is a public good to arrest people for crimes they committed. The progressive approach to crime does not work. Vagrancy can be a crime.
- Men cannot become women, and vice versa, and the belief that they can switch is a religious belief, not a scientific one. Women’s identities in particular, given the thousands of years of extreme violence women have faced for being women, are not a costume to be put on by privileged men. Sex-based rights are critically important for women and men’s religious beliefs on gender should not be used to destroy hard-fought progress for women.
- A strong US military is important. The military should be well-funded, disciplined, and well-compensated. China is a real military threat, and there will always be the need to react to attacks.
- Injection centers and other pro-drug approaches do not help addicts.

I agree with the left on raising taxes, and with the right on cutting spending. I would be a terrible candidate for anything.

Interesting question. I really had to think about it.

I think I'd agree on crime and the border, except I am pretty critical of the efficacy of the police re: crime and Congress re: border/immigration legislation.

But right wing:

-military and foreign policy matter. I guess this is more traditional right wing rather than modern but I'm probably fairly aligned with Graham and McConnell here, sigh.

Left wing:

-I think institutional racism/sexism are real problems and that we don't educate the citizenry on the realities of life in the US less than 100 years ago for minorities and women. And if we don't understand where we came from we can't get to where we should be as a great nation.

I agree, OP. I lean left but don’t fit nicely into a political mold. Criminals should go to prison for a long time. Death penalty is appropriate for egregious crimes. Young people should do 2-3 years of service to the country in some way. If a young person commits a crime, off to the military they go, or to another state’s youth program.

We should have a massive gun buy back program to get guns off the streets, we should abolish the 2nd amendment, and anyone who uses guns to commit crimes should go to prison or be banished to an island filled with violent outlaws. Violently mentally ill people who can’t stay on their meds need to remain institutionalized.

The rich should pay much higher taxes, which will fund domestic programs like universal healthcare and better pay for good teachers and combatting climate change. Religion has no place in politics. Term limits for all politicians. Automatic voter registration for everyone over 18. I could go on!

The U.S. should not be the world’s police force. In that regard Trump has a point, as awful as the man is.

The premise behind my question is that I don't think most people fall directly into the party line, agreeing with the entire ideological package of one side versus another - but I also don't think that those who lie in the center take the exact middle position on everything. I bet a lot of people are a mishmash of all kinds of different views.

I'm firmly on the left, but my most right wing views are:
Crime - it's a serious issue and I want some no-nonsense law enforcement and better police staffing especially in our cities.
The "border" and immigration - I put "border" in quotes because it's really not the border but illegal overstays. We need a streamline policy to enforce immigration law, not allow visa overstays and zero tolerance on drugs and gangs, we need to do this first and then reform the asylum process, hire more immigration professionals and develop a coherent, humanitarian, but firm approach.

My most leftwing views:
Environment - we need to get serious about reducing emissions and reducing plastic particle pollution. Even if it hurts economically for a time.
I'm also somewhat socialist on basic-needs type things like healthcare and housing.
