SMCM has similar acceptance rates and stats as all the SLAC that accepted my B-student and gave them merit to bring the costs in line with SMCM. This has made me assume they'll get in, but maybe I'm wrong?

Thank you for this. The previous poster claimed they probably wouldn’t take a B student but they do so good news for many. I’ll be looking at schools like this in a couple of years.

My kid was deferred and got in RD. Lower stats than that.

I’m sorry to hear your daughter was deferred. I agree with others to move on and try to get her excited about the other schools. It could turn into an acceptance but nobody can tell you the likelihood. I liked SMCM for my daughter years ago but they didn’t have her major. But I was going to encourage my son to apply as I think he’d thrive in a small school. Your post makes me think I shouldn’t talk it up too much because maybe it’s a reach. Would you mind sharing if your daughter was test optional (my son will likely be) and if she had mostly honors/AP? My son is in grade level math and science which makes me worry for his chances.

I think with deferral or waitlist the right thing is always to pivot to the known acceptances. If SMCM comes through later, you can always get excited about it again. But for now, there's no particular use in actively keeping her hope alive.

I’m trying to understand the question. Are you asking only if a deferral is likely going to become a rejection in RD? Or is there a bigger Q, as well?

I don’t know how often deferrals become acceptances at SMCM, but it seems like the sort of school where it would happen. And I glanced at the CDS, and it looks like they do take kids off the waitlist — not a lot, but some. So I think your daughter is doing everything just right.

My DD (B student) has gotten quite a few acceptances (yay!) but also a deferral from St. Mary’s C of Md.Too choice — visited a few times. She sent an LOCI—local admissions lovely response, university response we both thought dismissive—focused on SLACS and love 2! Merit and admissions, one harder to get into. And a few instate admits too.
A—we can pay for the SLAC she loved
B—does anyone get into St. Mary’s C if and after a deferral?
Visiting on Admitted students day to two SLACs but I know she just loves SMCM..
